Anjam-e-Atham (The Death of Atham)

On the conclusion of Jang-e-Muqaddas on June 5, 1893, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) published a prophecy about ‘Abdullah Atham who was the representative of the Christian Community in the debate that ‘Abdullah Atham would be thrown into Haviya (Hell) within 15 months – one month corresponding to each day of the debate and that he would be (severely) disgraced “Provided he did not turn to the truth.” This was because he lied and was hiding the truth about Islam and persisted in his falsehood. 

A period of 15 months ended on September 5, 1894, by which day ‘Abdullah Atham was still alive. There was a great uproar that the prophecy of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) turned out to be false as he was still alive. A procession was taken out on September 6, 1894, in Amritsar in which Atham was paraded as a sign that the Christians had become victorious over Islam.

Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) wrote in the Anwarul-Islam on September 6, 1894, that the Prophecy made by him was fulfilled in letter and spirit, because during the period of 15 months, ‘Abdullah Atham had turned toward the truth and had been quiet and did not say a single word against Islam and the Holy Prophet (sa), nor did he write any article or book against Islam during this period. Since September 6, 1894, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) issued seven posters one after the other inviting Atham to take an oath that during the period of 15 months, he did not turn to God, then he would be thrown into Haviya (Hell). In the posters, he offered a prize of Rs. 1,000 which went on increasing with every poster to Rs. 2,000, Rs. 3,000 and then Rs.4,000, and every time, Atham was invited to take an oath. Abdullah Atham died on July 27, 1896, i.e., within seven months of the publication of the seventh poster. 

The Book 

In the book, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) declared that the word of God was fulfilled and the Prophecy that he made came true. The title page of the book combines four journals, namely Anjam-e-Atham, Khuda-’i Faislah (Divine Judgment), Da‘wat-e-Qaum (Invitation to the Nation), Maktube ‘Arabi Banam ‘Ulema’ (Letter in Arabic Addressed to Scholars). The book was so telling and effective that the Christians became careful in the use of their language against the Holy Prophet (sa) and this was what Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) wanted that the Christian Missionaries should learn manners and become polite and gentle in the use of their language when talking of the Holy Prophet (sa). The book also created a stir in the intellectual circles of the time, because the entire history of the debate known as Jang-e-Muqaddas (Holy War) was traced and the background and the wordings of the prophecy about ‘Abdullah Atham were fully explained and presented in proper perspective.

یہ کتاب حضرت مسیح موعود علیہ السلام نے پادری ڈیپٹی عبداللہ آتھم کی وفات پر تالیف فرمائی جو ۲۷؍جولائی۱۸۹۶ء کو بمقام فیروزپور واقع ہوئی۔ اس کتاب میں آپ نے آتھم سے متعلقہ پیشگوئی پر روشنی ڈالی اور عیسائیوں، مسلمان علماء ،صوفیاء اور سجادہ نشینوں کو مباہلہ کے لیے دعوت دی اور عربی زبان میں ایک مکتوب باعمل اہل علم اور فقراء منقطعین کے نام لکھا جس میں آپ نے تائیدات الہیہ اور ان نشانوں کا ذکر فرمایا جو اللہ تعالی نے آپ کو عطا فرمائے۔ اسی طرح ضمیمہ انجام آتھم میں آپ نے بزبان اردو نشانات کا ذکر فرماتے ہوئے اپنے تین سو تیرہ (۳۱۳) اصحاب کی فہرست لکھی ہے جو حدیث نبویؐ کی اس پیشگوئی کو پورا کرنے والی ہے کہ مہدی کے پاس ایک کتاب میں بدری اصحاب کی تعداد کے مطابق ۳۱۳؍ اصحاب کے نام لکھے ہوئے ہوں گے۔
